Depending on your level of investment, read: how much you want to spend; you can have the durability of solid wood combined with the warmth furniture grade wood such as mahogany or you can go the route these days and buy an engineered door for a lot less. Your taste in what is appealing both inside and outside with respect to your door is important. You will look at the French doors and whether it is stained to your taste or painted with maple wood or cherry stain, it is your choice. You have to live with it. You can even consider a fiberglass door where they typically back on a finish to look like painted or stained wood.
When you look for a French door for your main entry door you must consider the choice between solid wood or fiberglass. Beyond that, you are faced with having glass panels or no panels. Glass changes the interaction of the door within your home. Light comes through the glass panels and illuminates. Even if it is under an awning, which if you face the sun is a good thing, an awning will allow filtered light to brighten the door glass from an inside perspective. Consider too the outside landscaping, does a door with glass, a traditional French Door, or a Leaded Glass Door fit with your vision of how you want to present the first impression of your home. There are a lot of external factors to consider when you decide to choose between a traditional French Door with Glass or without, or a Mahogany Leaded Glass Door.
When you finally have to decide on the harware for your French doors be prepared, the number of choices are just as many as the choice in doors. Door hardware ranges from the contemporary to traditional. You have the choice between brass, pewter, bronze, polished, satin, ad nauseam. Just when you thought you were done deciding how your new french door with or without glass is going to look from the inside, from the outside, with your landscaping, having to choose a door handle can be the straw that broke the camels back.
