Here are three classic examples of French Doors. Notice the number of windows on the doors. In a standard six foot eight inch door, you typically will have a choice between four and six windows.

What is a 4-Lite or a 6-Lite Door?

Just so you know, windows in French Doors are often referred to in the industry as lites or lights. In other words, the door to the right would be referred to as a “four lite French Door”.

French doors are versatile when incorporating them into your house design and the simplicity of their lines and the size of the glass make them a perfect choice for a front entryway.

To the left, I have featured a “six-lite” French Door. It also has a panel bottom. You can purchase French doors without a panel bottom. In this instance you want a “full-six-lite” French Door. I know it sounds silly to say, but if you are inquiring about a door with a Door professional, they will understand.

Leaded Glass in a French Door?

The final example of French Doors featured to the right is a French door that incorporates leaded glass panels into the window design.

This design was actually created by my father and I have yet to see it duplicated elsewhere. While the design still incorporates the classic French Door wood construction, the leaded glass, available in clear glass or glue-chip glass adds a certain flair to your exterior front door.

If you are interested in the Leaded Glass French Door, drop me a line and I can see if I might be able to scrounge one up.

As always, be Door Smart. Man that is starting to sound corny.
